towns across southern indiana. there are many with a lot of destruction. getting word of nine fatalities undergoing a massive search and rescue effort over at least four counties here where there is so much destruction especially on county roads that they can't get in. a lot of debris is going to have to be removed. we are talk about tree limbs, power lines, whole houses moved off their foundations. as a meteorologist i can tell you these winds were probably well in excess of 170 miles per hour with the damage i have seen in this location alone. it is amazing when you take a look at the massive undertaking. search and rescue across four counties that will take a couple of days to complete. there are people missing. tons have been injured. behind me here an elementary school that was severely damaged but kids taking shelter in that no one was harmed. it is a very, very solid structure but the top of it has pretty much been blown off by this massive tornado. it is still an ongoing outbreak. if you look at the average

we manufacture a lot of things in northeast indiana. what i hear from manufacturers back home is instead of worrying about what the rest of the world is doing we should be worrying about what we are doing here. we need an energy policy. we need to reform our tax code, simplify our tax code. those things right there would make a huge, huge difference in helping our manufacturers be successful and more productive right here at home rather than trying to get those companies from other countries back into the united states let's encourage and stand besides those manufacturers that are here because they will grow and continue to produce. i am certain that what we need more now than anything else is simplify the tax code, go to a territorial tax structure rather than put our companies at a disadvantage. i went to as a small business owner i have done our taxes, filling out tax forms can be complicated and frustrating. i glanced at the irs home page to see how many forms there are that could potentially be filled out i found 1,171 forms that c

i want to go back to the hearings that we had earlier in iowa and indiana. we talked to a lot of business folks, a lot of chamber of commerce groups, communities out there that are already doing some very unique and creative things in preparing for veterans as they come home, whether it's job fairs, whether it's connecting employers with these particular veterans that are coming home. and there's a lot of -- a lot of success that is being done there. unfortunately, mr. chairman, we're not seeing the same type of success within the federal government's agencies over at the va. whether it's the t.a.p. assistance program. there's a communication breakdown between our veterans and employers back here at home within the programs that we currently have. and so i think for us to -- to go down this route and create another program would really be ill advised, because we already have programs in place that aren't being fully utilized and that we should be focusing on them and making sure that we are connecting with veterans, whether it's overseas before they're comin

they still have indiana state police who have the area completely under lockdown. they have a number of people volunteers who want to come in and help, but the problem is there's so much devastation and they are trying to shut off the electric lines and all of the natural gas in the area because they don't want tocause more problems with the volunteers coming in if they have a danger of fire. so many homes were destroyed that one of the state police troopers who i talked to said they have not been able to get a count because of the mass destruction. the high school in this area it was virtually wiped out. about 80 kids were in the high school when this storm rolled through. no one in the high school was hurt. back to you. >> temperatures right now have gotton below -- to be below freezing as we see the snow. that's only adding more problems for those who may want to get in and start cleaning up isn't it? >> reporter: you know, it actually is. not only because of the cold but also they have a lot of slick road conditions in the area. right around the town, again, th
